Steve Martin – The Crow (New Songs for the 5 String Banjo)

We all know Steve Martin as that guy that used to be pretty funny.  The Jerk is probably one of my favorite comedies of all time.  But we all seem to forget he’s a master banjo player.  Seriously.  I mean yes we’ve all seen him with the banjo on SNL with the arrow through his head, but really, have you listened to his playing?  It’s fantastic.

On Steve’s 2009 release The Crow (New Songs for the 5 String Banjo), he shows us he’s not only a great banjo player, but a really talented songwriter as well.   Although half the songs are instrumental (and AMAZING) the other half are thoughtful and often retrospective songs that really transport you into another place.  The songs make me wistful for an ice-cold beer (or lemonade) and a rocking chair out on the porch.

The standout song is bar none, Pretty Flowers (in which the incredible Dolly Parton does a duet).  It’s beautiful love song that will make you square dance in your heart, at least.  Just all kinds of wonderful.

So check out The Crow today and thanks for reading!
